5 upcoming survival horror games that’ll make you scream
From Texas Chain Saw Massacre to Alan Wake 2, 2023 is a huge year for survival horror games!
2023 has been a great year so far for survival horror games. Already, major releases like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 clawed their way into the hearts of horror fans. However, we’re only a little more than halfway through the year, and we still have plenty of new survival horror games on the horizon.
From two asymmetrical multiplayer games based on classic horror films to a long-overdue sequel, here are five upcoming survival horror games that’ll make you scream!
1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Aug. 18, 2023)
Developer Sumo Digital and publisher Gun Interactive are no strangers to they asymmetrical multiplayer sub-genre of survival horror. With Friday the 13th: The Game now nearing its final resting place, the team behind it are drawing closer to another game based on an iconic slasher franchise. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, based on the iconic 1974 slasher flick, differentiates itself from Gun’s previous entry by incorporating three killers instead of one.
With the strategic design choice of including three killers for each match came the new challenge of balancing gameplay. To accommodate for the triple threat, the developers spent additional time ensuring the game’s levels, as well as the killers’ abilities, don’t make winning impossible for survivors. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre revs up onto PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC on August 18, 2023.
2. Alan Wake 2 (Oct. 17, 2023)
When Remedy Entertainment’s original Alan Wake first hit shelves in 2010, it took the survival horror genre by storm with its unique blend of action and psychological horror. Now, after 13 long years, the long-overdue sequel is finally on the horizon. With a stronger emphasis on survival horror than its predecessor, Alan Wake 2 looks like an even darker tale for the author. Now, FBI agent Saga Anderson will get caught up in the nightmare as she investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders in Bright Falls, Washington.
Throughout the game, you’ll get to experience both Alan and Saga’s stories in any order you want, as each go on their own dark adventure. As you play, both characters will have to deal with enemies with supernatural forces summoned by the darkness overtaking the town. Alan Wake 2 creeps onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on October 17, 2023.
3. Alone in the Dark (Oct. 25, 2023)
Though most people think of Resident Evil and Silent Hill as the definitive survival horror games, many forget about the equally important Alone in the Dark. Well, with a modern remake on the way, that should no longer be the case. Featuring well-known actors like Jodie Comer and David Harbour, this cinematic horror game will take you through the halls of a completely reimagined Derceto Manor.
With each character offering players a slightly different version of the story, you’ll definitely want to play through this one at least twice. How will things unfold as Emily Hartwood hires a jaded private investigator to hunt for her missing uncle in this upcoming remake? You can find out when Alone in the Dark comes to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC on October 25, 2023.
2. Silent Hill 2 Remake (TBD 2023)
Another exciting remake that survival horror fans have to look forward to is Silent Hill 2. Following years of rumors, we finally got confirmation of an official remake of Konami’s classic game last year. Developed by Bloober Team, the new game will retell the iconic story, but with modernized controls and an over-the-shoulder camera.
Currently, we don’t know much about the new remake. However, it seems already that Konami hopes to do for Silent Hill what Capcom did for Resident Evil in its string of remakes. Either way, we can look forward to Silent Hill 2 Remake later this year on PlayStation 5, and eventually for PC.
1. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game
Closing the list out similarly to how we started it, we have yet another asymmetrical horror game based on a horror movie franchise. However, unlike the ultra-popular Texas Chainsaw Massacre, developer Teravision Games are drawing from a lesser-known, cult classic horror comedy. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game takes the campy murderous intergalactic clowns from the big screen to your favorite gaming console.
With Friday the 13th: The Game’s Randy Greenback on the team, this comedy horror translation features experienced developers with a history for converting slashers to multiplayer games. Better yet, to stay true to the source material, the developers are also working with the original directors the Chiodo Brothers. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game hits PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC later this year.
