A Wu-Tang Clan video game may be coming to Xbox
Taste the pain in this rumored action RPG inspired by the legendary hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan!
Reports suggest an action RPG based on the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan is in the works for Xbox.
VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb mentions the potential game in his recent live stream on YouTube. The information provided by Grubb lines up with details provided by Jez Corden from Windows Central. Codenamed Shaolin, the game will reportedly be a third-person melee-oriented RPG.
Both Corden and Grubb suggest the recently formed development studio Brass Lion Entertainment will helm Shaolin’s production. Industry veterans Manveer Heir, Bryna Dabby Smith and Rashad Redic formed the company in 2019. Their mission is to provide representation to marginalized groups in video games. In the past, the founders of Brass Lion Entertainment worked on a number of major titles such as Mass Effect, Sleeping Dogs and Skyrim.
A Tweet by Brass Lion Entertainment appears to further support the claim. On September 27, the company announced a job opening for a game designer to work on an unannounced action RPG. One day later, Heir reposted the Tweet, adding the game will have, “a dope anime aesthetic.”
Corden also reports some additional details about the Wu-Tang Clan game. According to Corden’s sources, Shaolin will have a campaign that spans approximately 24 hours of gameplay. In addition, the game will feature an endgame with consistent seasonal updates and content drops. Players will be able to obtain loot, weapons and gear in endgame dungeons and other events. Corden also suggests Shaolin will feature co-op gameplay for up to four players.
Wu-Tang Clan: merging rap with video games
Wu-Tang Clan will also reportedly be directly involved in the game’s soundtrack. If the rumors turn out to be true, Shaolin will not be the hip hop group’s first venture into the world of video games. In 1999, a fighting game titled Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style released for the PlayStation.
Although gameplay faced technical issues, such as a poor framerate and unresponsive controls, Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style received praise for its innovative four-player matches. In addition, members of Wu-Tang Clan produced the soundtrack with 14 tracks exclusively for the game. The video game disc also doubled as an audio CD. This allowed people to listen to the music from the game using any CD player.
For now, the new Wu-Tang inspired game remains unconfirmed. However, the documents received by Corden all point to Shaolin moving forward with development. The details also suggest the title will launch as an Xbox exclusive. Microsoft is currently building an extensive catalogue of exclusive titles for Xbox Game Pass. An RPG based on the legendary Wu-Tang Clan would be another great addition to Microsoft’s ever-growing library.
