WB Games could be broken up due to WarnerMedia-Discovery merger
With news breaking today that AT&T would merge its WarnerMedia assets with Discovery in a $43 million deal, the implications appear to be far reaching even impacting video game publisher WB Games.
As we’re well aware with every merger or sale of a media company effects on every division, much like when SEGA purchased Atlus and merged some of its operations with its own. The news of a merger of WarnerMedia with Discovery is no different. As assets get re-assigned, that means ownership of studios could change in the gaming industry. But being unclear of where assets and studios are going seems a little odd, right?
According to Axios’ Gaming Editor Stephen Totilo, that’s the case with WB Games as it appears the publisher will be broken up in the WarnerMedia and Discovery merger.
While it hasn’t been confirmed yet what is happening with every studio, Julia Alexander of IGN was able to confirm that some studios will stay with AT&T and some will go to Discovery. She also confirmed that DC Comics is now co-owned by Discovery and that Rooster Teeth has been sold. No word yet though on where Rooster Teeth has been sold to.
You’re probably asking what this means for WB Game studios like NetherRealm, TT Games, or Rocksteady? Unfortunately, no one knows and probably won’t for a bit. Mergers and sales are always messy as assets are hammered out on the business side by lawyers. All you can hope for is that everyone isn’t affected job-wise by studio shutdowns or new management.
We’ll keep an eye on this story as more information becomes available.
