The worlds of professional wrestling and video games go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly. The fans have proven this in recent history with a silent on-going sign war proclaiming their opinions of RPG games. In particular, it appears many wrestling fans have strong opinions on the Final Fantasy games. However, a Tweet by @WilliamRBR shows that these two worlds collide even amongst the wrestlers themselves.
The post features a video compilation showing AEW wrestlers using quotes from Street Fighter: The Movie during promos and matches. The three highlighted clips feature Bryan Danielson, Miro and Kenny Omega. Though powerful lines regardless, casual viewers might not realize the genius references to Street Fighter. However, the video package demonstrates three examples of these performers paying homage to this classic (albeit cheesy) video game tie-in movie.
The first clip shows a scene of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s take on Colonel Guile saying the line, “You’ve lost your balls.” The clip that follows is from a promo cut between Bryan Danielson and Kenny Omega from this Wednesday. Danielson uses the same line from Street Fighter as an insult against Omega.
The next Street Fighter clip features the character Bison dramatically proclaiming “Game over!” Miro mirrors this phrase before delivering his finishing submission move against Fuego Del Sol in a match for the TNT championship. Sure, the line might be cliché, and the words themselves don’t necessarily reference the movie. However, it’s the way Miro delivers the phrase that truly pays homage to the campy 90s flick.
Although the first two segments may very well be coincidence, the last clip with Kenny Omega is a direct quote from Street Fighter: The Movie. Omega’s rendition of the “Tuesday speech” on Impact is practically word-for-word from Bison’s monologue from the film.
From the first day that I graced your promotion, it was the greatest day of your promotion’s life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

AEW and Video Games Collide
Kenny Omega’s Street Fighter: The Movie reference is not a surprise, due to his well-known love for gaming. That’s also the reason why Omega is taking on a supervisory role in the upcoming AEW video game.
