Agent 64: Spies Never Die is the Goldeneye sequel you always wanted
Developed by Replicant D6, Agent 64 is a love letter to the game that set the gold(eneye) standard for console FPSes.
GoldenEye 007 was essentially lightning captured in a bottle. It more or less defined how console first-person shooters played for years to come and stands out as one of the best licensed games (and possibly just game, depending on who you ask) of all time.
But it never received a proper follow-up back in the day. While developer Rare created Perfect Dark, another fantastic FPS for the Nintendo 64, and another James Bond film The World Is Not Enough also received a shooter adaptation by EA and Eurocom, a true espionage FPS sequel never happened.
Thankfully for GoldenEye 007 fans, an indie spiritual successor is in the works. Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a game that takes heavy (and I mean heavy) inspiration from Rare’s 1997 classic. Everything from the graphics to the music to the UI to the animations emulate the style of the original game.
It looks like a really cool, if very on-the-nose, throwback to a beloved title. We can’t wait to dig into this game when it launched later this year.
Diving into Agent 64: Spies Never Die
Developed by Replicant D6, Agent 64 is a love letter to the game that set the gold(eneye) standard for console shooters. Details like the angular level construction and models help sell the tribute, even with the polished graphical effects. In addition to a multi-level story campaign, players will be able to create their own levels and share them online.
The description for the story reads as such:
John Walter, ex-agent codename 64, is called back into action to save the world once more. Protect the future against the phantoms of the past. Each story mission is a self contained environment where you have to accomplish varied objectives, such as hacking terminals, steal secret plans, free civilian hostages and much more. All the while fighting armed guards in epic shootouts.
