An anonymous hacker posted a 128GB torrent like to 4chan on Wednesday that leaks the entirety of Twitch.
Among the information leaked includes the streaming site’s source code and user payouts. The hacker states the purpose was to, “foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space.” In addition, they believe the Twitch community is, “a disgusting toxic cesspool.”
Although some originally questioned whether the information is real, Twitch confirmed its authenticity. Video Games Chronicle reached out to the streaming company, and a spokesperson responded, confirming the security breach.
We can confirm a breach has taken place. Our teams are working with urgency to understand the extent of this. We will update the community as soon as additional information is available. Thank you for bearing with us.
A Twitch Spokesperson
The data, believed to be obtained on Monday, is publicly available to download on 4chan. The leaked files contain all of Twitch’s source code throughout its existence. In addition, the data includes creator payout reports dating back to 2019. The hacker also leaked information on other properties owned by Twitch, such as IGDB and CurseForge.
Additionally, the breach reveals details surrounding an unreleased Steam competitor called Vapor. Ironically, the hacker also leaked security details. Twitch uses internal “red teaming” tools with the purpose of improving security. The tools allow staff to pose as hackers.
The hack left many users concerned about the security of their login information. However, Twitch states there is no sign of exposed login details. They also add that the hacker did not take any credit card information. To remain safe, however, it is still recommended that Twitch users turn on two-factor identification.
Twitch Millionaires
Some of the most notable information leaked involves the payouts to popular streamers such as Shroud, Nickmercs and DrLupo. The documents show that these creators, among others, raked in millions of dollars from streaming. In total, 81 Twitch streamers earned more than one million dollars from the site since August 2019.
As large as the Twitch leak currently is, there may be more to come. The anonymous hacker also states that this is just the first part of information they will leak. As of now, however, it remains unknown what will be released next, nor when to expect it.
