APMEX releases limited-run Sonic the Hedgehog coins for its 30th anniversary

Get them while you can! These silver and gold coins celebrate 30 years of everyone's favorite hedgehog.

Precious metals vendor APMEX recently announced a series of commemorative Sonic the Hedgehog gold and silver coins in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary. APMEX partnered with SEGA to release these items to honor the Blue Blur and his 30-year history in gaming. The coins, containing one ounce of their respective metal, have been minted in a limited quantity — making them a hot commodity for you coin-collecting hedgehog lovers. (You have to exist out there, right?)

We’ll say it upfront: the coins are beautiful, with a lovely print of Sonic on the front of each piece. Anyone looking to add a bit of metal to their Sonic collection will not be disappointed.

More details on the APMEX Sonic coins

APMEX minted 30,000 silver Sonic coins featuring the hedgehog on the front and an image inspired by Sonic‘s world design on the back. You can also pick up a number of colored silver coins featuring characters from the series — 3000 coins each were minuted for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik. And for the super collectors out there, you can grab one of the 300 gold coins minted with the same design pictured above — a pricey purchase at $2,000 USD, but damn, does it look pretty.

The company also created a limited silver proof coin that included only 300 minted copies, but unfortunately, it seems these have all been sold. No word on whether or not they’ll be put back into circulation.

APMEX is no stranger to minting coins based on video game franchises. Previously, they’ve released coins to celebrate the Tetris and Pac-Man series. These Sonic coins are certainly a beautiful rendition of that lovable hedgehog and a nice way to celebrate the franchise’s anniversary — especially for the numismatist SEGA fans out there. Again, we know you exist.

If you want to get your hands on one of these coins, check out APMEX’s site here. Hurry, though, because supplies are limited!
