Big PlayStation news on the horizon, industry insider suggests
I always feel a certain level of revulsion when reporting on rumours and supposed ‘inside tips’ from within the gaming industry. See, back when I was but a young ‘un – a greenhorn consuming the very same games journalism of which I am now a rotating cog – I was burned one too many times by hoaxes and all-too-convincing ‘leaks’ that turned out to be fakes. One that I recall getting to me in particular was a startlingly well-done mockup of a DS port of Super Mario Sunshine, and even in recent years an alleged Isle Delfino DLC pack for Mario Odyssey almost managed to hook me. Never again, you charlatans. All the same, the PlayStation rumour I’m reporting on today comes from a fairly credible source, so let’s all agree to collectively suspend our disbelief and just for a moment indulge the possibility that it isn’t total twaddle.
The Rumour Mill(er)
As GameRant reports, “PlayStation fans could have a whole lot to look forward to during the early days of April.” Kinda Funny Games’ Greg Miller, an industry figure who’s reliably provided prognosticative nudges in the right direction on social media before, “has given gamers a reason to be excited.” Apparently, Miller has heard “three massive rumors about PlayStation”, with these sources reporting that news could come “as soon as next week”. Unless this all turns out to be an elaborate April Fools’ prank (hey, the timeline matches up), we may cautiously begin to warm up the hype jets. With all the tentative gingerness of a hypochondriac sloth.
While Miller “has understandably provided no specifics on these rumors”, we can make some pretty educated guesses on what they might be. Talk has been swirling about a number of possible corporate acquisitions Sony could make, especially in response to Xbox’s industry-moulding purchases of Activision et al of late. Likewise, the announcement may pertain to the mysterious PlayStation Spartacus, which is “rumored to feature a large catalog of classic PlayStation titles while merging PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus.” Taking a page out of the Switch Online playbook are we, now, blokes? Whatever; just gimme classic Crash and Spyro, and I’m all set.
Mandatory disclaimer: this could all be a metric tonne of BS, as it is just a rumour at present. However, Greg Miller is a respected member of the gaming community in several circles, and he doesn’t strike me as the type to spout nonsense unprompted, so we’ll see. Tencent purchase of PlayStation inbound? No surprise there.
How about you? What do you reckon these announcements could be? Let us know!
