BIOMORPH is a sci-fi Metroidvania coming to Switch in 2023
Morph into action next year!
Transform or be destroyed. Lucid Dreams has announced their newest game, BIOMORPH, an ambitious sci-fi metroidvania that takes place within a dark future on an alien world. The makers of side-scrolling action adventure game Legends of Eternal are trading their fishing poles for lasers and a dark sci-fi setting where mutations are everything.
The announcement of BIOMORPH was accompanied by an action-packed trailer. The visual presentation, coupled with the kinetic energy, become a striking ensemble of fluid action, something that reminds one of a Gennedy Tartovsky cartoon, such as Samurai Jack.
On the topic of cartoons, the big hook with BIOMORPH is taking the DNA of fallen bosses, and mutating the character into new, more dangerous forms, something that feels like a slot nod to cartoons like Street Sharks. Using the different forms of bosses can players hope to uncover the truth about themselves and the world they inhabit, but in the fields of mad science, anything is possible.
Enemies learn and mimic the player, growing smarter, faster, an stronger. Even more dangerous, players can morph into the forms of their defeated bosses. From there, they can also use their attributes to solve puzzles, navigate obstacles, and defeat other bosses. Fortunately, players aren’t entire alone on this bleak planet. Players befriends the citizens of Blightmoor, rebuilding the town to player’s desire, learning of their stories, and the tales they have to tell of this mysterious place. It’s a battle of DNA and an adventure of truth in BIOMORPH.
BIOMORPH flies out next year!
Something I do miss in games and media in general is embracing the mad science of genetics and DNA. I grew up with shows like Swat Katz, Animorphs, and the infamous The Amazing Spiderman on Fox Kids. Each show had a focus on morphing, mutations, transformation, or some other form of mad genetic tampering. So, it is interesting to see BIOMORPH take a chance at such a subject for its gameplay mechanic.
There isn’t any such thing as too many metroidvanias. Quite frankly, the more the merrier, and BIOMORPH is shaping to be another exiting one, especially for the Nintendo Switch. 2023 is a long wait. However, that means there’s plenty of time to dig into the miles-long backlog that I, and likely many gamers, have.
