The 25th anniversary of the Tomb Raider series graced the entire year of 2021. From collaboration projects with Fortnite to announcing a cookbook based on the series. Celebration for Tomb Raider is still going strong into 2022 at Square Enix, though. With this beautiful box art collaboration from Final Fantasy artist Akihiko Yoshida.
Square Enix’s Yoshida has always been a prominent artist for their Japanese RPG library. Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XIV are a couple of big names under his belt. So, you can imagine how shocking this collaboration boxart project with Rise of the Tomb Raider is – helping mark the 25th anniversary of the series. Yoshida even shared his notes regarding his vision for the composition:
“To express Lara about to embark on an adventure full of conviction and confidence, strength, and mature beauty.”
By paying respects to the 1996 Tomb Raider on PlayStation 1, Yoshida used the color of Lara Croft’s tank top as inspiration for the background. In my eyes, the box art is very reminiscent of his older work with Vagrant Story and newer pieces for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.
On the 25th anniversary page for Tomb Raider, you can find a downloadable link for this stunning box art variation. While a one-time thing, I’d love to see more artists in Square Enix’s circle take charge of different visual projects to expand their IPs.
