Capcom certainly enjoys keeping us all on our toes. They have been playing fast and loose with our curiosity, beginning with a strange countdown webpage. Rumors and speculations are running rampant throughout social media as to what it means. Then late Monday, a tweet went out from the Resident Evil Portal Official Twitter account. It was cryptic and teasing, saying “there’s something suspicious [sic] activity going on at the Resident Evil portal.”
The tweet also promised something would be revealed around 4 p.m. JST/2 a.m. EST. Who could resist staying up so late just to see what Capcom could possibly be up to? Not me! When 11 p.m. PST rolled around for me, I combed through every recent tweet and searched every area of the zombie infested RE website for just a hint of news.
The quietly opened door
Capcom is clever, I will say that. Instead of something flashy, they quietly opened the doors to The Portal. Inside is a dream for those interested in video game archives. New entries of Resident Evil History have been added under the heading Umbrella: The Tragedy. Resident Evil (the first RE game), RE2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and RE0 each have their own portals with a treasure trove of information and artwork from the original games.
Opening each game’s page, we are invited to take a trip down memory lane. Along with a brief overview of the story, there are sections dedicated to the characters, creatures and more with redesigned models and original concept artwork, while music from the game plays. Considering I started playing the series with RE4 and have only played the remasters of the first three titles, it is incredible to see what the developers imagined through Resident Evil History.
In order to see everything Capcom has hidden behind its archive doors, you will need to register or log into your Portal account. The registration process takes a few minutes, but it is worth it. Capcom has promised more, starting with another entry on February 22, 2022. Eventually the full catalogue will be on display in Resident Evil History.
