Castlevania: Resurrection Dreamcast demo finally released online

One of the wonders about the Dreamcast homebrew community is that it seems every few years a long-forgotten game is unearthed from a dingy, dusty Dreamcast development kit. Konami’s Castlevania: Resurrection happens to be the latest in a long line of canceled Dreamcast games that have finally seen the light of day.

What makes things more exciting is the long-awaited demo has been released online for everyone to enjoy.

Known as the “E3 Pre-Demo,” the demo is said to have been intended for journalists and executives at E3 in 2019. It was compiled and released by Dreamcast preservationist Comby Laurent and his team, which includes the original GD-R dump and several formats to make it easier for people to burn and play the game on different hardware.

Initially developed for the SEGA Dreamcast, the game was cancelled after disagreements between Konami of America and Japan. In an interview from 2007, Resurrection art director Greg Orduyan said the game was internally sabotaged by “some people within Konami who had their own agenda.

What’s Castlevania: Resurrection about?

The game is set in 1666 and features Sonia Belmont, who possesses supernatural abilities that lets her feel the presence of spirits. Sonia was also a main character in Castlevania Legends for the Game Boy in 1997. Along her quest, she would meet up with Victor Belmont, who would later be show up in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.

Finding the Castlevania: Resurrection demo is a really big deal for video game preservation, and we can’t wait to see what’s discovered next. If you’ve managed to play the demo, sound off in the comments below!
