Winston is stronger and jumps higher in this new Ghostbusters mod!
Programmer Master Linkuei shared our first in-game look of Winston in the upcoming Ghostbusters mod Saturday on Twitter.
Along with some excellent looking screenshots, the post also provides further details of the character. One standout fact is that Winston will be stronger and able to jump higher than the other Ghostbusters. In addition, Linkuei reveals the mod will also include two base options for uniforms, as well as the ability to customize outfits.
Another one of the mod’s programmers BillyTime!Games also explained how the new mod will incorporate costume selection. The user-friendly implementation of this new feature involves simply pressing any button at the select screen. This will enable you to change the color of your Ghostbuster’s uniform.
However, Billy did explain one roadblock the team ran into on the mod’s development. He explains how the vanilla SEGA Genesis game “doesn’t play nice” with some of the new code when it comes to cutscenes. That’s because the original game featured only three character models within each cutscene in correlation with its playable characters. As a result, the workaround involves overlaying Winston on top of Egon Spengler when a player selects him to play as.

Although the franchise has a shaky history with video game adaptations, 1990’s Ghostbusters for SEGA Genesis stands out as a fun exception. Featuring your standard run n’ gun action of the area and an original story based on everyone’s favorite band of paranormal exterminators, fans loved this game. However, there was one sole problem: it only featured three of the four Ghostbusters.
Unfortunately, the developers opted to exclude Winston Zeddemore from the game. Now, after 32 years, a team of talented modders looks to rectify the situation. In April, the trio of Danilo Dias, BillyTime!Games and Master Linkuei announced they would develop a mod for the Genesis game’s ROM to add Winston. In addition, Winston’s actor Ernie Hudson will lend his likeness for the project.
