Destruction AllStars developers are reportedly working on a Twisted Metal game
If the rumors are to be believed, Lucid Games is working on a revival of the Twisted Metal franchise.
[UPDATE: According to new reports, Lucid Games is no longer working on a Twisted Metal project following the poor reception to Destruction AllStars. No replacement developer has been specified, with Sony not officially confirming the news as of yet.]
Sony has allegedly handed the reigns of Twisted Metal to Lucid Games, the developers of Destruction AllStars. Inside sources told VGC that Lucid Games are handling the new entry partially based on their work on Destruction AllStars, but also because of the company’s track record with car racing games. Sony hasn’t officially announced the title yet, though it will likely coincide with the upcoming Twisted Metal TV series.
If the report is to be believed, the upcoming game will be the first Twisted Metal entry in over a decade. It would also mark the next collaboration between Lucid Games and Sony, which has published a number of the studio’s games over the years.
With this new game supposedly incoming as well as the TV series, we may well see a Twisted Metal revival in the wake of the ultimate failure of Destruction AllStars. Whether or not that revival will live up to the quality of its predecessors is up in the air.
Why the Destruction AllStars team is working on Twisted Metal
Lucid Games does not seem like the obvious choice for a revival of Sony’s forgotten vehicular combat series. Even if Destruction AllStars shares a lot of gameplay elements with Twisted Metal, the game’s middling reception at launch would normally indicate that Sony wants to forget about it. Yet perhaps it’s those gameplay similarities that were enough to convince Sony of Lucid Games’ worth.
We don’t know much about this title, but VGC indicated that the game would operate under a free-to-play model. Destruction AllStars initially launched under this model for PlayStation Plus subscribers before launching in a traditional digital or retail model. It could be that Sony is trying this formula again with a respected franchise; time will tell if this outing proves more successful.
One person who is decidedly NOT a fan of this rumor is original Twisted Metal series director David Jaffe. He confirmed in a YouTube video that he is not involved in any Twisted Metal project right now. Jaffe also expressed doubts about the Destruction AllStars team doing justice to the franchise.
