Don’t Panic! Could Yoot Saito, Devolver Digital collaborate on a Seaman sequel?

It started innocently enough. Fork Parker, Devolver Digital’s chief financial officer, tweeted SEGA asking to let his company develop a Seaman sequel. Sounds awesome, right? But c’mon, how many times have we seen something like this? A random developer wants SEGA to give them the rights to make a new entry in a classic franchise, everyone gets excited and then nothing happens. Rinse and repeat.

Well, this time might be different. You see, Parker also tweeted the request to Yoot Saito, the Japanese badass who originally designed Seaman, and he tweeted back.

Parker replied, “Maybe for PC and smartphone?” It’s quite possible Saito actually owns the rights to the Seaman intellectual property, while SEGA retains the rights to the Seaman games it published. If that’s the case, Saito and Devolver Digital might not need SEGA’s permission at all to make a new entry in the Seaman franchise.

Now that we think about it, a mobile Seaman game sounds pretty awesome. What do you think?
