EA removes Russian teams from FIFA 22 and NHL 22
EA Sports' move echoes that of real-life sports leagues.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted EA to announce yesterday it will remove Russian teams from FIFA 22 and NHL 22.
In the company’s official statement, EA Sports states its support for the Ukrainian people. As a result, it states it will remove the Russian national team and all Russian clubs from current EA Sports FIFA games. This includes FIFA 22, in addition to FIFA Mobile and FIFA Online.
The publisher’s moves mirror those of real-life sports sanctions taken against Russia. The nation was expelled from the 2022 World Cup, and Russia’s teams were also suspended from all international competitions held by FIFA and UEFA.
In addition, the company made a similar statement for NHL as well. EA Sports adds that it will also remove the Russian and Belarussian teams from NHL 22. Just as FIFA and UEFA banned Russian soccer teams from competition, the International Ice Hockey Federation also banned Russia’s real-life hockey teams from entering competitions as well.
The recent suspension of Russian FIFA and NHL teams is only one of the many sanctions and entertainment blockades imposed on the country. Other examples also include Apple’s suspension of sales in the nation and Warner Bros.’ delay for The Batman in Russia. Meanwhile, other gaming companies are organizing relief efforts of their own.
