Everything we know about The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie
Happy trails.
Another week, another thousand-hour RPG to fill my plate with. Please, devs; I’m getting stuffed! As the next installment in the renowned Legend of Heroes series continues to be toiled over in Japan – doubtlessly targeting a release date this year to continue the franchise’s annual trend – a new(ish) epic journey is about to unfold closer to home; with the upcoming release of 2020’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie in the West. Developed by Nihon Falcom, and published by NIS America, it promises to deliver a ripsnortin’ JRPG experience to fans and newcomers alike. So in other words, basically everyone. Nice broad appeal.
To champion the game’s upcoming debut, here’s everything we know about The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie!
Continuing the saga
Let’s just say it’d be best to not come into this one with no prior knowledge of the series, eh? Trails Into Reverie serves as the fourth entry in the Trails of Cold Steel story arc, which is a sub-series within the wider Legend of Heroes franchise; and which is not, I was saddened to discover, in any way associated with a certain OC hedgehog. Building upon the narrative foundation established in previous games, this entry introduces players to a new cast of characters and further expands the complex and interconnected lore of the series. Break out your wikis, gentlemen. Set several months after the events of Trails of Cold Steel III, the game follows the adventures of Lloyd Bannings and his comrades from the Crossbell Police Department’s Special Support Section (S.S.S.). Think that’s enough ‘S’s there, lads?
Joking aside, it’s undeniable that at the heart of Trails Into Reverie lies a compelling and intricate narrative that intertwines political intrigue, personal relationships, and the overarching struggle for power within the continent of Zemuria. Timely themes indeed. Players will embark on a grand adventure, exploring vibrant cities, traversing treacherous dungeons, and uncovering secrets that shape the destiny of nations. The game’s emphasis on storytelling and character development has long been a hallmark of the series, and it’ll surely leave players emotionally invested. Enough that the thumb-twiddling for the next localization will begin. We’ve all been there.
Engaging engagements
Of course, storytelling is all well and grand, but this ain’t a visual novel. How’s the actual gameplay? Well, it’s a robust and strategic turn-based combat system, as you might expect from the studio. You’ll engage in thrilling battles against formidable adversaries; typically whatever ugly reptilian bozo of the week elects to meander up to you. Utilizing a diverse set of skills, abilities, and crafts unique to each character, you’ll pound their mugs into submission and grow your repertoire of moves. The “Tactical Link System” recognizable from prior entries returns, allowing for dynamic team-up attacks and cooperative maneuvers.
Moreover, the Orbment system, a signature mechanic of the Legend of Heroes series, makes a return in Trails Into Reverie. This intricate bit of gubbins allows players to customize their characters’ abilities and combat styles by equipping different types of Quartz. No, that’s not an off-brand type of perfume or slang for a drug (actually, it might be the latter, thinking on it). Instead, they’re gems which grant unique spells and bonuses. Experimenting with different Quartz combinations and optimizing character builds adds a layer of strategic depth to battles, something often sorely needed in turn-based titles.
Strategic positioning and careful resource management will be essential for success, as players must analyse enemy weaknesses and exploit them to gain an advantage. No half-asleep button mashing your way through this one!
Legendary visuals
Thankfully, your eyes will be pretty happy while you’re at it. Trails Into Reverie ably showcases the artistic prowess of Nihon Falcom, offering a visually captivating experience. The game features beautifully crafted environments, vibrant character designs, and meticulously detailed animations. Whether exploring the bustling streets of Crossbell City or venturing into ancient ruins, you’ll be immersed in a world brought to life with attention to the little things, and that evergreen anime art style. Top that off with a gorgeous musical score that enhances every moment of senseless violence, and you’ve got a package that’s equal parts atmospheric and boundless fun. Pure poetry, eh?
Trailing off
But what is there to do beyond the bog-standard cycle of battling and levelling? Well, every location across Zemuria is teeming with the requisite secrets waiting to be uncovered, as you might reasonably predict. Feel free to interact with NPCs, and engage in side quests that further flesh out the game’s world and characters. Always nice, and the game actively encourages this kind of thorough exploration; rewarding players with valuable items, hidden treasures, and additional lore.
Trails Into Reverie also offers a range of minigames and recreational activities. From card matches like Vantage Master to various casino games, lighthearted fun can be the order of the day if you fancy. Whether it’s testing one’s tactical wiles or trying one’s luck, these amusements offer a welcome respite from the rigors of the main quest.
Building budding bonds
Ah, socialisation. Often so difficult in real life, yet so critical in Zemuria. Building strong bonds with party members plays an integral role throughout Trails Into Reverie. Through various events and dialogue choices, players can deepen their relationships with companions, unlocking additional story segments and character-specific abilities. These interactions not only provide insights into the lives of the diverse cast, but also impact the overall narrative. Choices made during bonding moments may influence the game’s outcome. Telltale ought to watch out. Nurturing these connections invests players in the lives of the characters they accompany on their journey. Better hope none of them die then.
New Game Plus (and plus, and plus)
For those seeking extended playtime and enhanced challenges, Trails Into Reverie includes a New Game Plus mode. This mode allows players to carry over certain progress and items from their completed playthrough, which also opens up new possibilities and story branches. Additionally, the game features optional boss battles and hidden dungeons, providing even more reason for players to dive back into the world of Zemuria and further unravel its mysteries. Might want to consider clearing whatever schedule you had.
