Fan-made Sonic Xtreme recreation is looking pretty… ‘extreme’

If you haven’t heard, there’s been a fan project to make Sonic Xtreme (the cancelled Saturn title). The project has been going for a few years now, but it looks like they, or rather he (it seems to be mainly one guy these days) is doing pretty well.

Andrew75 has been working on Project AXSX – which stands for ‘Andrew Xeniczone Sonic Xtreme’ (named after the two original programmers) – since 2006. Both he and ‘Xeniczone’ (who left the project in 2010) have been trying to recreate Sonic Xtreme just by looking at the limited footage and screenshots from SEGA’s E3 1996 promos.

Anyway, after releasing various screens, videos and development details over the years, Andrew75 has also managed to release a couple of playable demos, the last one released late 2011. Yesterday Andrew75 uploaded a new video, showing more progress from the project (above).

The more exciting news is that another playable demo is on the cards, this time with a few levels (the last demo only had one). But the release of the demo has been delayed, Andrew75 stated:

“One of the biggest reasons for the next demo’s delay is due to setting up a lot more in the way of sprites.”

Some people might call BS on this project. But I was able to get my hands on the 2011 demo and while it only contains one level, no baddies and no level goal (as far as I could tell) – it ran beautifully, looks good and sounds good too. I can’t wait to see what the next demo will look and play like.
