Yesterday, Square Enix officially announced Tactics Ogre: Reborn. The game will reimagine the 2010 PSP remake of 1995’s Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Although Square Enix states the new version will be a complete overhaul with tons of quality of life improvements, some fans are not taking so kindly to the price.
Pre-orders for the standard edition of the game currently sit at $49.99, a price many feel is too high for a remake of a remake. For the Premium Edition, which features the soundtrack for Reborn and the 1995 original, the price jumps another $10. Overall, some fans believe the cost of admission just doesn’t match the game’s value.
It’s not just the price fans are upset about either. Some fans also don’t think the “enhancements” really enhance the game at all. One Tactics Ogre fan even admitted to feeling heartbroken over the smoother game textures, as he believes it takes away from the pixel art that made the original title stand out.
Another fan believes the voice acting takes away from the game’s charm. He states that the text-only approach was far superior, but he’ll at least take Japanese voice acting. Fortunately, for him, the reimagined game will feature an option for full Japanese voices, but this response is still probably not what Square Enix would want to hear.
Japanese players get exclusive goodies
Although players in other parts of the world only have the Standard and Premium editions to choose from, Japanese gamers can get some exclusive collectible merchandise, for a price. In Japan, players have the option to pre-order the Tactics Ogre: Reborn Collector’s Edition. For 22,000 Yen ($165), players get an exclusive art book, a three-volume script book set, a mini-soundtrack CD and a set of tarot cards with a special bag and mat.
Japanese players who don’t want to go all the way in with the Collector’s Edition still have the chance to win exclusive merch. That’s because all physical pre-orders in Japan, even standard and digital, are eligible to enter a lottery for the chance to win a replica Glass Pumpkin. Only 500 Glass Pumpkins will be up for grabs.
