Final Fantasy producer discusses series recent struggles
If there is one series that’s been through ups and downs in the last decade, it’s Final Fantasy. While XIV is one of the most popular MMOs in the world, some forget it started as a disaster that needed to be rebooted from scratch.
The man responsible for saving said Final Fantasy is Naoki Yoshida. He is now overseeing much of the series’ future with XIV and producing the upcoming XVI for PS5. But things always haven’t been positive. In a recent interview with Inverse, he admitted that the series has struggled to adapt to modern gaming conventions.
In terms of whether Final Fantasy is successfully adapting to industry trends, I believe the series is currently struggling. We’re now at a point where we receive a wide variety of requests regarding the direction of our game design.

But it’s not all doom and gloom from Yoshida! Looking towards the future of Final Fantasy XIV, he was blunt.
I want to keep making sure that Final Fantasy XIV will be fondly remembered by many as a fun game that gave them the best gaming experience. I also want to make sure that it will remain in operation for decades to come.

I fully appreciate any game developer or producer who says they will keep a game online for years to come. Server shutdowns have killed many games just in the last year. Whether they are big or small, those games created memories for players they will never forget. So any developer saying they’re going to fight to keep those servers up needs commended. Best of luck on everything Yoshida!
Final Fantasy XIV is available now to sign up and play on PC and PS5 (no, I’m not posting the whole meme pitch). Final Fantasy XVI also releases for PS5 in 2023. What do you think about Yoshida’s comments? Let us know in the comments below!
