GingerOfOz releases new modded console-PS2 Eclipse

Console modder GingerOfOz has a new handheld offering. Known for building popular consoles portables, he recently unveiled his latest project, a pocket PlayStation 2, on his YouTube channel. Popping up on social media in 2019, GingerOfOz has gathered a following with his adaptions of Nintendo Gameboy-sized Wii mods. The PS2 Eclipse is the product of two years of labor.

The PS2, arguably one of Sony’s greatest hits, has sold almost 158 million units worldwide, making it the best selling console of all time at the time of printing. Boasting a library of over 3,800 titles, there was a little something-something for everyone. And now, thanks to GingerOfOz, those titles are accessible in your pocket  with the PS2 Eclipse.

This is due to the hardware Ginger OfOz uses. With the magic of 3D printing (seriously what can’t t they do with that printer?!), trimmed down original PS2 motherboards, and stir in some PS Vita buttons and Nintendo Switch joysticks, ta-da! A brilliant invention of on the go gaming. And because of its hardware, there isn’t any major compatibility issues noted, so far. Unlike emulators, the console loads off of a USB drive.

Gamers should be aware that load times may be slower with some titles, and there can be struggles with controller detection, according to GingerOfOz. This can render some titles unplayable, but the modder says he has plans to implement a fix in the software update soon.

Unfortunately, given the amount of time it took for him to make only fifty of the PS2 Eclipses, he will not be making any more in the foreseeable future. However, he has uploaded the plans on his website for anyone wanting to try a DIY. There is also a complete breakdown of the technical specs.

For those gamers like me, who are interested in how he created the PS2 Eclipse, check out his work-log. To check out the rest of the cool stuff he’s worked on, follow this link here!
