Gotham Knights developer explains decision to cancel last-gen release
The decision was made due to the game's "scale and scope".
WB Games Montreal held a Q&A session on Discord last week to answer burning questions about Gotham Knights.
In the session, fans on the game’s Discord server could ask members of the development team anything they wanted. One of the first questions raised involved WB Montreal’s decision to cancel Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. While the developer first revealed the disappointing news three weeks ago alongside the latest gameplay trailer, they offered little explanation.
However, thanks to the fan’s question, the game’s executive producer Fleur “Flaoua” Marty finally offered up some reasoning. In his explanation, he explains that he and the rest of the team knew the decision would ultimately disappoint many fans. However, he adds that it was a necessary choice to maintain the quality WB Games Montreal aims for.
When considering the scale and scope of Gotham Knights, we had to prioritize and focus our efforts to deliver the game at a satisfying level of quality for current gen. We totally understand that this is upsetting to players who don’t own a current gen console yet, and believe me, we really didn’t make this decision lightly. But, in the end, we wanted to focus on delivering a game we are truly proud of.

The “scale and scope” Marty referred to likely revolves around Gotham Knights’ keen attention to detail. In a separate question, creative director Patrick Redding explained the rich immersion players can expect while exploring the districts of Gotham. Each district will feature NPC citizens, vehicle traffic and even trains.
In addition, Gotham Knights will also feature dynamic weather that changes night to night. Players can also enter in and out of multiple buildings because bad guys don’t only commit crimes outdoors.
About Gotham Knights and how to pre-order
Developed by WB Games Montreal, Gotham Knights is a co-op action game set in a world where Batman died. Players can take control of Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Robin as they clean up the streets of Gotham City. In addition, the Court of Owls, a severely underrated shadow crime organization from Batman lore, will take center stage as the game’s big bads.
Gotham Knights launches on October 25, 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. You can also pre-order the game now on Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. In addition, you can learn more about the game by checking out Everything We Know About Gotham Knights.
