Jet Set Radio inspired album is a great homage
Take the streets with this fan's funky beats
Possibly one of SEGA’s most popular series, and definitely a gem in the Dreamcast library, Jet Set Radio has been an artistic inspiration to many fans over the years. Most recently, VeraFX’s album Jet Set Radio Revolution is a fresh example of that.
VeraFX’s album spans all genres from funk and reggae to metal and rock. “Revolution,” is the musical homage that asks why we haven’t seen an official sequel despite loads of inspired games. Allow me to break down impressions of a few tracks out of the total 13:
“The Animal” – The premier track and definitely a call to arms for the GG’s as they prepare to take to the streets during their continual battle for their turf combining techno, funk, and dance.
“I’ll Shock Ya” – Straight forward rock that would even lend itself well to have a vocal track, but still stands strong with great riffs and power behind the rhythm.
“Dognapped” – As the name suggests, I almost wonder if this song is what plays in Potts the dog’s brain as he’s being taken from the GG’s home base. This track is calm and chill, but eerie in the right areas.
“We Own The Streets” – The bass we all need, no question. I’m not at all ashamed to say quite literally this song slaps.
“Vengeance” – Hip-hop that reminds us why Jurassic 5 was part of the US soundtrack for Jet Set Radio. Strong beats and smooth call and response lyrics.
“Devil’s Contract” – If there is a final boss in this album, this is their theme song. Remember that insane moment on top of buildings during a creepy opera? Here ya go.
From beginning to end, however, this album would fit perfectly behind Jet Set Radio or Jet Set Radio Future. More notably though, Jet Set Radio Revolution feels like the soundtrack the fans need in their next Jet Set game. Check out the full album on VeraFX’s bandcamp page.
