Jim Ryan: more PlayStation acquisitions will happen
The Sony Interactive Entertainment president affirmed Sony's commitment to acquisitions in the latest PlayStation podcast.
Acquisitions are a huge, hotly debated topic in the gaming world right now, and PlayStation has certainly gotten in on the action already. The company acquired five studios in 2021 and already announcing two more in the first quarter of 2022. And while more official plans haven’t been revealed yet, it looks like the Sony isn’t stopping there.
That’s according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan, who confirmed the company’s intention to continue acquiring studios. In the latest episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast, Ryan outlined Sony’s position on gaming acquisitions. Quote:
We’re growing through acquisition. We acquired five studios through the course of 2021. We’re in discussions with Bungie. And we have more planned.
Jim Ryan, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment
It looks like acquisitions are still a core part of Sony’s ongoing strategy. So far, we’ve heard no official word on what studio will be the next one to join the company. However, if Ryan’s words are anything to go by, we should expect to hear about some new PlayStation acquisitions this year.
What’s on the horizon for PlayStation acquisitions?
Last year, Sony acquired five studios and folded them into PlayStation Studios: God of War (2018) support studio Valkyrie Entertainment, Returnal developer Housemarque, Demon’s Souls remake developer Bluepoint Games, The Playroom developer Firesprite, and PC porting legends Nixxes Software. Just this year, Sony also added Destiny developer Bungie and Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios to its repertoire.
Many have interpreted this as a means to keep up with Microsoft, another gaming giant who’s been gobbling up companies left and right. The impact of the infamous Activision Blizzard acquisition is still leaving waves in its aftershock, and it’s (rightly so) got the gaming public cautiously interested in what will happen next.
What do you think of these PlayStation acquisitions? Which studio do you think Sony should consider buying? Let us know!
