Video game legend John Madden passes away at 85

Sad news today for the sports and gaming world. Hall of Fame football coach and broadcaster John Madden has passed away at the age of 85. His family announced that he died unexpectedly, and no further details have been given. Below is a statement the NFL provided teams and media members courtesy of Adam Schefter.

A video game and sports legend

John Madden is one of the rare figures that made a name for himself in the sports world and gaming world. His accolades in football as a coach are unmatched. He sported a 112-39-7 overall record as head coach of the Raiders for ten years. And he took the Raiders all the way to win in Super Bowl XI in 1977. After his coaching career, he turned to the broadcast booth! In his time there, he became one of the most well-known broadcasters in football for thirty years.

He also became known in the gaming world during his broadcasting career. In 1988, he licensed his name to John Madden Football! The first entry in the overwhelmingly popular football sim series that’s still going strong to this day. Because of the series, Madden has become synonymous with gaming and football and will be for years to come. I hope that EA will take the time in next year’s installment to give proper tribute to the legend that put their series on the map. No one can ever deny that John Madden will be a legend in football and gaming for years to come.

Our deepest condolences go out to everyone in the Madden family and those affected by the news.
