Kao the Kangaroo fans, strap on your boxing gloves and prepare to head back into the kangaroo’s shoes. (Or lack thereof.) A new game in the Kao series, simply titled Kao the Kangaroo, is set to launch in summer 2022.
There hasn’t been a new Kao game since 2006 with the European-exclusive Mystery of the Volcano. With this new title, we could very well see a comeback for the middleweight marsupial.

What we know about the upcoming Kao the Kangaroo
From the trailer, it looks like the new Kao will retain the same action-platforming gameplay from the previous games. Kao can punch, jump, grind, and climb around, fighting enemies, doing obstacles, and collecting items along the way. Bog-standard stuff if you’re familiar with 3D platformers, but considering Kao hasn’t been seen since the 2000s, this is exactly the kind of return to form the series needs.
The official description of the game’s story reads as such:
Join Kao on his biggest adventure yet! The brave kangaroo has to find his missing sister and solve the mystery of what happened to his long-gone father. He will need to travel the world and confront the famous fighting masters, who are influenced by the mysterious, dark power. On the course of his journey, Kao will learn under the guidance of his master Walt how to become not only an awesome fighter, but also a clever one who uses his head as much as his fists. Although he will fight lots of enemies along his way, he will also make new and strengthen old friendships. Finally, he will need to face his ultimate opponent – the mysterious Eternal Warrior, whose ambitions are a threat to the world balance.
Kao the Kangaroo Steam description
But what is Kao the Kangaroo, anyway?
Kao the Kangaroo is a Polish series dating back to 2000 with the original game for the Dreamcast and Windows. (A version for the Game Boy Advance also launched in 2001.) Selling over 700,000 units worldwide, the series is certainly not the biggest name in platforming but it has a dedicated fanbase. That fanbase is partially responsible for this new game, actually; a Twitter campaign to bring Kao back resulted in Tate Interactive re-releasing Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 for Steam.
The upcoming Kao the Kangaroo game is developed and published by Tate Interactive. It will be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in summer 2022.
