Kongregate is relaunching to be destination for block-chain video games
Kongregate's CEO states that NFTs will give players "a deeper experience".
Kongregate and Immutable X announced today that they will relaunch Kongregate.com as the premier destination for blockchain games.
The plan will involve a $40 million fund that consists of an IMX token pool. These tokens will also serve as grants to blockchain game integrations on Kongregate.com. In addition, the relaunched website will welcome both established and indie game developers interested in implementing blockchain development.
For those unfamiliar with the term, blockchain games are those that feature elements based on cryptocurrency and NFTs. Although the concept of introducing NFTs to video games is controversial, even well-established companies like Square Enix and SEGA have plans to jump on the trend. The idea is to utilize blockchain technology like cryptocurrency and NFTs for microtransactions and other forms of in-game DLC.
Kongregate, well known and loved for its web-based gaming platform, now wants in as well. As a result, they partnered with Ethereum’s leading L2 scaling solution Immutable X on the new project. While this will certainly raise some red flags to many gamers, Kongregate insists it will stay true to its core roots.
Kongregate says NFTs will innovate gaming
Kongregate executives detail how the ability to include blockchain technology in gaming will further its mission to promote developer innovation. In addition, they add that the new plan will better help serve the community by giving players a richer and deeper gaming experience. Overall Kongregate reiterates that promoting blockchain games will benefit both developers and players to help build a lively, interactive community.
We want our players to be owners in their personal gaming journeys. Blockchain technology allows us to give them a deeper experience in ways not possible with traditional games, from enabling players to help shape what comes next in the storylines they love to being able to maintain their unique character across titles.
Markus Lipp, Kongregate CEO
