Thanks to recently leaked Xbox achievements, it appears the iconic shooter GoldenEye 007 may return.
True Achievements reportedly found the achievement list from Microsoft’s servers and subsequently leaked it. The list contains 55 unique achievements that total 1000 Gamerscore. The artwork for each of the achievements includes screenshots directly from GoldenEye.
GoldenEye 007 originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 as a tie-in title for the 1995 movie. Developed by Rare, the classic first-person shooter had the rare pleasure of being a good movie tie-in game. In addition to its beloved status when it released, fans to this day regard the game as one of the most influential titles for the FPS genre.
Because of its unanimous admiration amongst the gaming community, the lack of a proper re-release may at first come as a shock. However, legal complications around creating 007 games have made porting the title extremely difficult. In fact, Microsoft previously attempted to relaunch GoldenEye in 2008 for Xbox Live Arcade. Although they managed to complete production, Nintendo ultimately halted the game’s release.
Because the leak is unconfirmed, it’s unclear whether Xbox intends to directly port the original N64 game or if they’re planning an HD remaster. Either way, Microsoft and Nintendo’s improved relations make the likelihood greater than ever. For now, however, stay tuned. The team at Mega Visions will continue to update you if and when new information comes out.
