Legend of Valkyrie to become the newest Arcade Archives title

Another month, another return to the Arcade Archives well. You certainly can’t fault us for consistency of content. It’s something I look forward to now, to be honest; almost affectionately. And who can blame me? The HAMSTER Corporation’s ongoing effort to catalogue a wide variety of arcade classics from yesteryear, all while sprucing them up with contemporary niceties, is a noble quest. One which we shall continue to dutifully chronicle for as long as it endures.

Arcade Archives’ latest addition

So, what’s next on the AA docket? According to RealOtakuGamer, who cite famous Japanese gaming mag Famitsu as their source, it’s Valkyrie no Densetsu, an ambitious action-RPG from 1989. Critics fell head over pen (or, in the modern context, Mountain Dew-soaked keyboard) for the plucky little game back in the day. You may be a little more familiar with its localised title from Namco Museum and the Wii Virtual Console, Legend of Valkyrie, which brought the swashbuckling classic to a whole new generation of fans. Controlling the sword-armed warrior maiden Valkyrie (it says here), you’ll indulge in all the blade-swinging, gold-gathering and gratuitous-upskirt-shotting you could possibly ask for from an 80s arcade RPG, all in the name of restoring Xandra Land.

I’m especially partial to the horrifying grinning cabbage monster at the bottom.

The report more specifically describes its gameplay as “run ‘n gun style with shmup elements, with characters having a projectile weapon used to fire at enemies from an overhead perspective.” In other words, business as usual for something that was ultimately designed to hoover up as many hard-earned quarters as it could. Thankfully, the Arcade Archives version will be a one-off fee, and it hits on April 14th on all the usual HAMSTER-favoured platforms.

Will you be picking it up? Did you ever play the original Legend of Valkyrie? Let us know!
