Lollipop Chainsaw remake comes out next year

Suda51 and James Gunn will not return, unfortunately.

On Tuesday, publisher Dragami Games confirmed that a remake of cult-classic Lollipop Chainsaw will release next year.

Dragami Games’ head Yoshimi Yasuda, the original game’s producer, will once again lead the remake. Along with Yasuda, other staff members from the original Lollipop Chainsaw will also work on the remake. In addition, new development staff from Dragami Games will also provide the remake with fresh blood.

Although the remake aims to recreate what made the original game special, Yasuda explains there will be a couple key differences. One major difference is that the remake will feature more realistic graphics due to the power of next-gen hardware. Another change, unfortunately, is that the soundtrack will feature significantly less licensed tracks. While the original Lollipop Chainsaw featured 16 licensed songs, legal issues pertaining to the rights restrict the remake from featuring those tracks.

Unfortunately, while Yasuda will once again helm the development team, two key players will not return for the project. Originally, rumors suggested that both Suda51 and James Gunn would reprise their roles for the Lollipop Chainsaw remake. However, both Suda and Gunn state that neither are involved on the project.

Regardless, Yasuda remains committed to bringing fans a return to the cult-classic hack-and-slash title. The reason behind the remake, according to Yasuda, is because of “various factors” that resulted in the game becoming unavailable on modern hardware. As a result, Yasuda, wants to make sure players have access to the title.

We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us and did not want to live it limbo, where players who want to play it cannot. As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor.
