Miyazaki teases old From Software callbacks in Elden Ring
"If you look hard enough."
Like most From Software games, paying homage to past titles is almost a rite of passage. Even game director Miyazaki references them by creating multiple poisonous swamps to heighten difficulty. So, it’s no surprise when Miyazaki recently teased callbacks to past games in the fast-approaching Elden Ring.
From infamous weapons like the Moonlight Greatsword to familiar yet oddly-encountered characters out in the field, the From Software team always finds ways to showcase past concepts in new environments. As you’d imagine, the Moonlight Greatsword makes a return in Elden Ring, but also Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls III‘s greatsword: Storm Ruler.
There’s also the endless list of deceitful Patches-like characters that’ll backstab players when the time is right. Another mainstay of From Software character design since almost everyone is out to get you in some way or fashion. But outside of characters, weapons, and bosses: Miyazaki mentioned that there are many Elden Ring callbacks from the studio’s legacy that’ll please fans all over the spectrum of titles.
“I can confidently say yes, this time…Elden Ring is the sort of game that forgives a massive sense of volume and bulk. And so I felt like I was entitled to include these things this time. So yes, you will find them if you look hard enough.”
With Elden Ring set to launch on February 25th, now is the time to brush up on past games, and maybe you’ll catch a callback or two when it comes out!
