Modder adds new features to Sonic Advance on Android
Sonic Advance just got a little more advanced thanks to a modder.
A recent Tweet by Sonic The Hedgeblog announces new mods by Furikan for the Japanese Android version of Sonic Advance.
The mod pack, titled Sonic Advance Anniversary, features support for wider screens, non-MIDI OST and multiple languages. Furikan designed the mods to enhance the Android port of Sonic Advance. The mods come as part of a celebration for the original game’s 20th anniversary.
An advanced Sonic Advance
One of the major features in the Sonic Advance Anniversary mod pack is the multi-aspect ratio feature. This creates graphical enhancements for Android devices with aspect ratios between 16:9 to 21:9. The creator notes, however, that some menus, special stages and the opening could use some improvement. Additionally, the water animation in the first stage is also different to the original Android port. Instead, the animation replicates that of the Game Boy Advance version.
Another feature included in Sonic Advance Anniversary is translated text. Furikan designed the translated text to resemble the Game Boy Advance version’s instruction manual. In addition to the original Japanese version, you can translate the text to English, Spanish or French.
In addition, the mod pack has two versions, each with a variant soundtrack. One version contains the .MIDI soundtrack from the original Android port. However, the second version introduces a remix using the same instruments from the Game Boy Advance. It’s important to note that the mod does not use the soundtrack from the Game Boy Advance version. Instead, it remixes the music from the Android port with the instruments from the Game Boy Advance.
The original Sonic Advance released for Game Boy Advance in 2001. In 2011, a Japan-exclusive port released for Android devices. The new Sonic Advance Anniversary mods were showcased at Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2021. Sonic Amateur Games Expo is an annual event ran by Sonic Fan Games HQ. Every year, they present a showcase of fan-made content, including games and mods, with an emphasis placed on Sonic the Hedgehog. The 2021 event is happening now and runs until August 27.
