Mortal Kombat 2 writer teases the movie’s plot

Slater plans to embrace the weirdness of the Mortal Kombat Universe

In January, Warner Bros. revealed that Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater would pen the script for Mortal Kombat 2. Beyond that, other important details, such as when and what to expect from the sequel, remained behind closed doors. However, in a recent interview with The Direct’s Russ Milheim, Slater teased where things are going so far.

Slater exclaims how much fun the writing process is for MK2 and adds how the screenplay is roughly halfway through. In addition, he elaborates that the team’s main goal for the sequel is to give fans something satisfying, yet unpredictable. While Slater remained understandably vague on details, he revealed that everyone involved on the project paid close attention to fan feedback on the first movie.

‘Here’s the stuff fans responded to, and here’s what people liked out of the movie, and here’s the stuff that didn’t work as well as we hoped.’ So we’re really looking at this as a chance to take everything that worked in the first one, and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable.

Because Slater is widely known for his work on Marvel’s Moon Knight series, the writer also eluded to comparisons with the MCU. He states that while the next Mortal Kombat movie will undoubtedly feature some of his own sensibilities, he’s ultimately going for a much different tone. Naturally, Mortal Kombat is full of some far weirder and gruesome moments than Marvel’s family spectacles. Therefore, Slater cements his intention to embrace that side of the Mortal Kombat universe.

This is Mortal Kombat. We have guys who are ripping off their faces and breathing fireit’s a weird universe. Let’s embrace some of that weirdness, and let’s make a Mortal Kombat sequel that no one is expecting and that can kind of sneak in and blow everyone away.

For now, it’s unclear what exactly fans can expect from Mortal Kombat 2. Story details, including the introduction of new characters, are all kept under wraps. However, if Slater writes fan-favorite Johnny Cage into the plot, WWE Superstar The Miz still has his eyes on that role.

With the success of last year’s Mortal Kombat movie, it will be very interesting to see where the story goes for the sequel. In the meantime, however, all we can do is speculate. What stories and characters do you hope to see adapted in the sequel? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
