New racer looks to bring back the style of Virtua Racing, with a modern twist
When it comes to SEGA’s earlier efforts in the world of 3-D arcade games, you would not need to look further than the original 1992 classic, Virtua Racing. Back in the day, this was one of the most sophisticated driving games you could find, easily more playable than most 3D racers back then, by a wide margin. As dated as it looks today, VR was mind blowing back then. There was a certain flair and style that the others really didn’t pull off, and by the looks of it, the days of flat shaded polygonal racers have returned.
Enter the world of Racing Apex, a new racer announced by the team over at Lucky Mountain Games. It seems to be a car combat/racing game, but in the graphic style of Virtua Racing, polygons and all. The game is to have eight different modes, including multiplayer, a Grand Prix/Arcade mode, Capture the Flag and a couple others. More less, it’s VR with guns, going off of the basics. Time Trial competition seems to be prominent as well, with online global leaderboards of ghosts to race against. For the people who just want to race, weapons and other items will be optional, if the car combat isn’t really your thing.
The game is more based on characters and customization, than just racing. With a choice of about eight different characters, and about thirty cars, there is a lot of choice here; as well as some SEGA fan favorites. In the trailer, I even saw a stock car with Hornet paint, so the fan stuff seems like it’ll be there. The gameplay looks smooth and promising, it seems like it’d provide a really fun experience with some extra fun stuff added in.
So far, Racing Apex definitely looks like a game to keep an eye on. A new racer, with a Virtua Racing graphical style, and car combat/customization, seems like a match made in heaven. No release date or anything has been set, considering this has been announced fairly recently. Personally I am pretty hyped for this, I’ve never seen another racer made like this.
