New Shin Megami Tensei V patch erases all mention of PS4 version

You’ve heard of patches that remove glitches. You’ve heard of patches that, irritatingly, remove content. Hell, you’ve probably even heard of patches that render entire games unplayable. But, dear readers, I put it to you: this is a first. How’s about a patch that gets rid of a whole stinkin’ console?

You read that right – well, sort of. As MyNintendoNews reports, the newest downloadable update for Shin Megami Tensei V has released, and it fixes what was presumably a pretty major blunder that eagle-eyed fans of the RPG discovered on launch. See, SMTV is a Switch exclusive – for now – and the majority of the game’s UI reflects that. However, a little bit of digging in the game’s system files on the part of dedicated netizens revealed numerous mentions of a PlayStation 4 version of the game, alongside a PC port. Players were quick to grab screenshots of the text, and they were right to do so, as Atlus have jumped on the mistake like a Japanese high school student on a Netherworld demon. Mistake… or spoiler?

For what it’s worth, the Tweet uncovering it has since gone private, leaving only this choice screengrab; so maybe the Atlus forces got to the poor sod. There might be something in it after all.

Either way, Version 1.0.2 has totally memory-holed all mention of these other platforms, restoring the Switch to its proud pedestal of exclusivity. Whether or not the ‘error’ was a tiding for some potential multiplat action somewhere down the line (unlikely given that Nintendo is handling publishing duties, although stranger things and all that) remains to be seen, but for the moment, this is a pretty amusing situation.

I don’t know where there’s left to go after this. Patching out gaming completely as a hobby? Would certainly make our lives a lot more productive (and that little bit sadder).

What’s your opinion of this whole affair? Did you pick up Shin Megami Tensei V? Let us know!
