[Update] New Sonic Mania details emerge from Comic-Con
Special Stages and story revealed at Sonic Mania's panel
[Update] SEGA has released a high-res screenshot (see right) of the special stage for Sonic Mania, which was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con. Nice.
[Original post] With Sonic Mania just a few weeks away, more information was shown at a special Sonic Mania event held at Comic-Con. The event was hosted by SEGA and had a few familiar faces such as Aaron Webber of SEGA of America, Takashi Iizuka of SEGA of Japan, and indie developer and main producer of Sonic Mania, Christian Whitehead.
In this panel, they showcased the final bits of Sonic Mania and talked about how Sonic Mania came into production. Stated at the panel, Sonic Mania‘s production name was called Sonic Discovery, and that the origins of Mania had been in talks since early 2016.
They talked more on how pitching Sonic Mania was a risk, but Takashi Iizuka saw faith in the game with Studiopolis Zone. Below are tweets from an attendee at the panel, @steventhepage. The first is the brand new special stage in Sonic Mania. It is based off of the stages on the SEGA Saturn and CD were. It features Sonic chasing one UFO, rather than him trying to destroy multiple UFOs from Sonic CD.

As far as the story goes, it says that it takes place after Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Dr. Eggman is said to be heavily depressed and many of his minions have gone rouge. You can read the summary of the story in Steven’s tweet below.
