Nintendo confirms they are skipping Gamescom 2022

After 2 years of cancellations, Gamescom is finally returning in the form of a hybrid event. There will be showcases for the show in person and online from August 24th through the 28th. While we don’t know all the companies in attendance, we know one that will not be there.

In an interview with Games Wirtschaft, a spokesperson for Nintendo of Europe confirmed that the company would not be attending Gamescom in any form. In a quote, the representative explained;

“Gamescom is a key event in Nintendo’s calendar of events. This year, however, after careful consideration, we have decided against participating in Cologne. Instead, players will be able to try out the games for Nintendo Switch at numerous events throughout Germany.”

Nintendo instead discussed how they will be attending events with their roadshow vehicles across Europe.

It seems odd to ignore a big event like Gamescom for Nintendo, but I get it. The hybrid model could make it arduous to get a proper showcase together for the company. Plus, it could complicate the release schedule they have in place for future Nintendo Directs for this year. When those Directs will take place, no one outside of Nintendo knows.

Gamescom 2022 will take place from August 24th to the 28th. Stay tuned to Mega Visions for future updates on the show. Are you surprsed to see Nintendo ignore the big European game showcase? Let us know in the comments below!
