PAX South will not return due to COVID-19 and declining attendance

PAX hopes to see fans return to their other events.

PAX announced on Twitter that San Antonio-based gaming convention PAX South will not return.

PAX made the statement on October 29. Two major factors influenced their decision. The first was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions caused by the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of last year’s show. Additionally, PAX made their decision based on a lack of growth since the first PAX South convention.

Official Statement from PAX

PAX first held their Texas-based convention in 2015. Although the original PAX South convention broke first-year attendance records, subsequent conventions remained stagnant. PAX adds that while their other events continued to grow attendance into the hundreds of thousands, PAX South felt like the same show each year.

Although other conventions, including PAX East and PAX West, will continue, the cancellation of PAX South remains disheartening to fans. The centralized location of the San Antonio-based convention made it appealing to fans who live closer to Texas than either coast in the United States. One disappointed user on Twitter pointed this out in a reply to PAX.

Some outraged Twitter users point the blame of the Southern convention’s faltering attendance on PAX themselves. Multiple comments cite the lack of AAA developers at PAX South as a major cause in the convention’s stagnation. However, others defend PAX, citing the lack of big companies at the convention could have been the decision of the developers.

Whatever the reason, the decision remains the same. PAX South remains cancelled for the foreseeable future. What do you think about the cancellation? Is PAX right for ending their San Antonio event or do you think they gave up too soon? Let us know below!
