SEGA’s management meeting document detailed not just the success of Yakuza’s PC sales, but Persona’s influence as well. The Persona series has had a strong couple of years and it seems SEGA plans to keep that momentum going.
What are SEGA’s plans for the Persona series?
Many of the IPs that have reached widespread influence listed in the meeting document under Japanese management are sure to be recognized. These games include powerhouses like Sonic the Hedgehog, Yakuza, Phantasy Star Online, and Persona. The presentation notes the success of the Sonic movie’s “blockbuster popularity” has led to others inquiring to collaborate with their other global IPs.
After Atlus joined SEGA in 2013, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei became mainstay IPs. The two brands have continued to grow in popularity, with the release of games like Persona 5 and its spin-off, Persona 5 Strikers. Now, SEGA wishes to spread the game series as a global IP. They list three different strategies to do this:
- Expanding our tech points with user
- Prolonging product life cycle
- Strengthening user engagement.
In order to touch on these strategies, specific plans for the series includes a few different things. They plan for a “Media mix roll-out”, including live and animations that have already received good feedback. They also wish to create “various touchpoints” and enhance their “user community”. How exactly they plan to do this with the game’s brand wasn’t listed in the document other than it being on their radar.
A strong global influence
We’ve already seen the effects of SEGA’s spread of the series throughout 2021. Their three-point plan listed in the SEGA financial report included Persona in it. Atlus launched the Shop Atlus store, which includes exclusive merchandise for the game series. The series also features in the January lineup for PlayStation Plus. Between collaborations and merchandise, it seems like everywhere you look, Persona has a presence—and SEGA wants to keep that up moving forward.
