Phil Spencer on the rumored PlayStation Game Pass: it’s an “inevitability”
Apparently, Spencer's on board with the idea and sees it as a natural step forward for the industry.
Rumors have been circling for a while now that Sony is creating a service similar to Microsoft’s Game Pass. The service, reportedly known internally as Spartacus, will seemingly combine Sony’s current game services and offer a full library of games for users to enjoy for a monthly fee. It’s gotten PlayStation players and industry veterans abuzz, and now Xbox head Phil Spencer has weighed in on the rumors.
IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey recently talked with Spencer about the PlayStation Game Pass rumors. Apparently, he’s on board with the idea. He’s previously highlighted the benefits that Game Pass brings to both Xbox players and the industry at large. According to him, a move like this makes perfect sense for Sony.
We don’t know if a Game Pass-type service is coming to the PlayStation 5 as Sony hasn’t officially commented yet. But if the comments from Phil Spencer are anything to go by, this would be a good move for the PlayStation line.
Phil Spencer and the “inevitability” of PlayStation Game Pass
Spencer commented on the rumors surrounding the supposed PlayStation service below:
I don’t mean it to sound like we’ve got it all figured out, but I think the right answer is allowing your customers to play the games they wanna play, where they wanna play them, and giving them choice about how they build their library, and being transparent with them about what our plans are in terms of our PC initiatives and our cross-gen initiatives and other things. So when I hear others doing things like Game Pass or coming to PC, it makes sense to me because I think that’s the right answer.

This is far from the first time Spencer has made comments and demands on the gaming industry to provide better services to consumers. Yet in this case, he doesn’t view a PlayStation Game Pass-type service as validation; rather, he sees it as the gaming market naturally evolving and changing.
When I’m talking to our teams, I talk about it as an inevitability. So for us, we should continue to innovate, continue to compete, because the things that we’re doing might be advantages that we have in the market today, but they’re just based on us going first, not that we’ve created something that no one else can go create.

Do you think Phil Spencer is right in thinking a PlayStation Game Pass-like service is inevitable? What do you hope to see in the Spartacus service? Let us know!
