The PlayStation 4 is an iconic game system that’s bound to go down in history for the legendary games released on it – but about three days ago, its lengthy legacy turned into an all-you-can-eat buffet. On December 13th, a small team of hackers released a working PlayStation 4 exploit that works on firmware version 9.00 and earlier. Now, just about anyone with a PS4 could run homebrew apps or play unauthorized copies of games at their discretion.
Under the guidance of PlayStation hackers/developers SpecterDev, ChendoChap, and Zullptr, jailbreak operation “pOOBs4” would reach Twitter last Sunday. Assistance from Sleirsgoevy on the WebKit browser exploits and famous PlayStation hacker TheFloW, who discovered the filesystem bug that allowed the exploit to work, pushed the operation along at a feasible pace.
Their combined efforts eventually led to the PS4 jailbreak, which requires network access and a USB key containing a particular file. Once it runs, the PS4 can receive downloads from a PC, whether the custom firmware from the Mira Project or the GoldHEN homebrew enabler.
PlayStation 4 exploit could be PS5 ready
One of the hackers, Znullptr, was the one who confirmed the PS4 exploit; but also stated that it “affects PlayStation 5 as well!” Still, don’t get your hopes up just yet because there haven’t been any version tests. The reason? The main dev doesn’t have a PS5. In the meantime, PS4 owners who haven’t updated past firmware 9.00 can jailbreak their systems while waiting to hear more on the PS5 side!
