PlayStation 5 Redesign Reported to be in the Works for 2022
It’s fair to say most of us know of the PlayStation 5 through whispers in the wind, not helped by elusive semiconductors, and scalpers scooping up supply so fast it’d make the SSD blush. With supply unlikely to improve until the next fiscal year on March 31 2022 it’ll be staying that way for a while. With every tunnel comes light however, and it comes in the form of a redesign that brings with it the hopes of seeing more PS5’s out in the wild.
This comes from a report that claims semiconductor supply chains, most notably TSMC, have begun planning for the production of a redesigned system with manufacturing set to begin in 2022.
Console redesigns are nothing new, with one or two major changes sprinkled in throughout a systems life cycle. It isn’t uncommon to see a few changes under the hood however, PS4 saw its first internal tweaks two years after its launch: its first physical redesign arriving later in 2016. The only firm detail for this new revision is a new version of the processor used that should bring with it some minor improvements to performance.
With PlayStation 5s hard to come by, it’s no surprise Sony are looking into ways to reduce the production costs. It’s still not clear if the PS5 redesign will only be internal or if it’ll be a complete overhaul. Which would you prefer? Let us know in the comments.
