PSO2: NGS Sonic crossover bogged down with expensive cosmetics

Sonic makes a dash towards players' wallets in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.

The inclusion of expensive in-game transactions eroded fans’ excitement for the Sonic the Hedgehog crossover event with PSO2: NGS.

At the official PSO2: NGS broadcast, SEGA announced two limited-time campaigns coming to Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. In addition to the Autumn Event, one of the events was a crossover with the blue blur to help promote Sonic Colors: Ultimate. Official Navigator for New Genesis Hiro Arai confirmed a variety of cosmetic items including a Sonic earring, Tails’ tails and Sonic’s shoes.

Arai failed to mention, however, that one particular set of cosmetics would set players back 10,000 AC. That much in-game currency costs $100. Additionally, purchasing a Premium Set is the only way to earn certain emotes for the crossover event.

These paywalls leave many New Genesis players feeling scammed. As a result, players took to social media to address their frustration. One Reddit user had this to say.

You could buy Sonic Colors Ultimate twice for that price and still have $20 left… Even the Tails glide motion isn’t worth it at $50. FIFTY DOLLARS for something you’ll spend like five minutes max looking at every time you log in for dailies.

Unexplained bannings in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

In addition to the frustration players feel towards the Sonic collaboration event, another issue is also causing distaste. Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis players are also making reports of unexplained bannings on their accounts. Some believe that certain players are being targeted by numerous alt accounts with harassment reports. Many believe, however, that bots automate the bans. However, SEGA denies any bot involvement.

Amid the negative publicity surrounding Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, players wonder if and how SEGA will respond.
