Reggie Fils-Aime’s new book, Disrupting the Game, out in May
I think it’s fair to say Nintendo fans felt a collective pang of sorrow when the former boss of the company’s American division, Reggie Fils-Aime, stepped down in 2019. An entire generation of gamers had grown up with his idiosyncratic presentation style – guiding the Big N through E3 after Direct, through their highs (the Wii) and their lows (the Wii U; funny how the addition of a single vowel can scupper your console).
No matter the occasion, Reggie would be there, arms invitingly outstretched, ready to dispense whatever charmingly off-kilter rhetoric he’d prepared to hawk that particular game. Highlights included his shockingly candid weighing session for Wii Fit; his being turned into a minifigure for LEGO City Undercover; and pretending to be certifiably insane for Yo-Kai Watch. This is all to say nothing of “my body is ready.” In short, he’s sorely missed, and not even the delightful irony of having a bloke named Bowser running the show can quite salvage things.
Official release date
Now, Fils-Aime has written a book about his long and storied career, which chronicles his beginnings in the depths of the Bronx all the way up to his golden years with Nintendo. So long was Reggie with the company that he started there in the era of pixels, and departed in the age of HD. As GameSpot reports, the tome – an autobiographical effort – is set to tell all. “The book is called Disrupting the Game, and arrives May 3rd, 2022,” states the report. In it, “Fils-Aime shares leadership lessons and stories from his life.” If one of the lessons isn’t ‘thou shalt never localise Mother 3‘, I’ll be very suspicious.
Reggie himself broke the news on Twitter, which you can check out below.
Book’s official description
The book’s official description reads: “Learn from Reggie how to leverage disruptive thinking to pinpoint the life choices that will make you truly happy, conquer negative perceptions from those who underestimate or outright dismiss you, and master the grit, perseverance, and resilience it takes to dominate in the business world and to reach your professional dreams.” Ah, so less ‘lighthearted look at a gaming icon’s personal life’, and more ‘intensive motivational therapy.’ Cheers, Reg.
Disrupting the Game is available for pre-order now at all major booksellers. Your body may be ready, but is your wallet?
