Resident Evil Easter eggs found in Ice Nine Kills new song Rainy Day
INK's new music video shows a bloody battle at the Umbrella Corporation.
Since their hit album The Silver Scream, Ice Nine Kills became known for making music that pays homage to classic horror movies. Leading up to the highly anticipated sequel album, the band released three new singles. The first two tracks were based on the movies American Psycho and Child’s Play.
Now, it appears as though the world of survival horror games are open for the band to tackle as well. Their newest single Rainy Day pays homage to the iconic Resident Evil franchise. From the lyrics to the song’s accompanying music video, there are many Easter eggs sprinkled throughout Ice Nine Kills’ new track. The band even used a modified version of the Umbrella Corporation logo to market the new song. Before I break down some of the other RE references in Rainy Day, you can watch the music video for yourself.
Resident Evil Easter eggs in Rainy Day
The video opens up by showing a group of scientists carrying a woman into the Umbrella Corporation building. They attempt to experiment on her by releasing a zombie into her room. She escapes to discover that zombies overtook the entire building. Because of this, the rest of the video focuses on her trying to survive the undead onslaught. This element stays true to the plot of Resident Evil, as Umbrella’s experiments with the T-Virus caused the Raccoon City zombie outbreak.
Another notable Easter egg in the music video comes in around a minute and a half. This section shows a zombie feasting on a body before slowly turning around. Every detail, up to the zombie’s bald head and pale gray skin directly references the first zombie reveal from the original Resident Evil game.
The music video for Rainy Day doesn’t just pay homage to the first RE game. In the video, a tall man with a bag over his head charges the protagonist with a chainsaw. For those unfamiliar, this is Resident Evil 4‘s terrifying Chainsaw Man. The Chainsaw Man is an exceptionally strong foe. He’s an extremely violent villager who became infected by the Plaga parasite.
The lyrics to Rainy Day are also jampacked with references. Right off the bat, lead vocalist Spencer Charnas dives into a play on words in the line, “Where evil has taken up residence.” If you didn’t know what the song was about before, you sure do now. The lyrics also highlight the corrupt Umbrella Corporation’s attempt to cover up their involvement in developing bioweapons. The lines say, “No faith in what red and white will say. Then save the truth for a rainy day.”
It’s clear the band Ice Nine Kills love the Resident Evil series. What do you think about Rainy Day? Are there any other references to the games you noticed that I missed? Let us know below!
