RUMOR: Resident Evil CODE: Veronica and Outbreak are getting remasters
Capcom has updated assets for CODE: Veronica, Outbreak, and Outbreak File 2 — indicating remasters may be on the way.
A few weeks ago, Capcom unveiled its new Resident Evil Portal, a website dedicated to news and histories on its beloved survival horror franchise. Launching with archives related to Resident Evil, RE2, RE3, and Zero, the page has been updated to include information on CODE: Veronica, Outbreak, and Outbreak File 2. With a further update promised on March 1, Resident Evil fans have begun wondering if this means Capcom is planning to release remasters of these titles.
Ordinarily, an update like this wouldn’t cause this much speculation; after all, the Resident Evil Portal is primarily a historical look back at the series. Yet diving deeper into the assets Capcom published revealed shows that this is going beyond a simple archiving.
Project Umbrella, a website dedicated to documenting Resident Evil history, noticed that some of the models have been cleaned up with nicer-looking textures. The team documented some of these changes on Twitter below:
Are Resident Evil CODE: Veronica / Outbreak remasters on the way?
It’d be one thing if these models were upscaled from their original resolution. But for some of them, like the hyenas, there are entirely new details present. This might hint that CODE: Veronica or Outbreak might be the next Resident Evil titles to get remasters.
You can view the full archive on the Resident Evil Portal here. (NOTE: You need to sign in with your Capcom ID to view these assets.)
This isn’t the first bit of evidence that supports a remaster / remake — at least, as far as Outbreak goes. Outbreak was one of the titles mentioned in the massive Nvidia GeForce leak last year. And wouldn’t you know it; the alleged release date is March 1, 2022.
Of course, we should take all of this with a grain of salt. It’s entirely possible that the update will just be more entries in the archive. Until we receive official word from Capcom on new Resident Evil remasters, all of this is speculation. We’ll just have to wait until March 1 to see what — if anything — is in store for us.
