Seaman’s developer says a sequel was planned for the 3DS

Back in 1999, the world was introduced to one of the most unique video games in SEGA history: Seaman. This virtual pet game gave you the responsibility of caring for a freshwater fish with a human face that resembles the game’s creator, Yoot Saito. Using the Dreamcast’s microphone peripheral, you had to feed and care for Seaman with limited action.  A sequel was released in Japan but unfortunately never made it to the west.

In a recent blog post from Yoot Saito, the creator revealed that a sequel to Seaman was in development for the Nintendo 3DS but was later scrapped due to complications.

“When Iwata-san came to ask me to create Seaman for the 3DS, I like to think he was in the same frame of mind as when he first came to visit me at my apartment back in 1999. I did start working on the project, but things got really complicated and I eventually let go of it. Unfortunately that brought an end to our relationship, where I could just casually visit him in Kyoto and have fun exchanging new ideas. I felt like we needed some time before we could go back to the kind of creativity-filled relationship.”

It’s unfortunate that a sequel to Seaman never came to fruition, but if Shenmue III is any indication, you can never say never! Have you played Seaman when it was first released on the SEGA Dreamcast? Would you want to see a sequel? Sound off in the comments below!
