SEGA AM2 developing Kantai Collection arcade game

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen something new from AM2, the powerhouse arcade developer responsible for titles like Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter and Hang-On, to name but a few. However, SEGA of Japan announced today that AM2 will develop an arcade game based on Kadokawa’s popular browser card game Kantai Collection.

AM2’s game will translate the card battle system to arcade action and is planned for release this summer in Japan, with playtesting beginning on Jan. 25 at the Club SEGA in Akihabara.

Kantai Collection, also known as KanColle, is a online browser game in which one assumes the role of an admiral, assembles a fleet of kanmusu (“ship girl,” girls based on World War II era Japanese ships and submarines) and battles against fleets of alien enemy warships. The game also has an official website than can be viewed here.

Obviously, this is exciting news as SEGA AM2 hasn’t released a new game in years. Hopefully, this means the developer will get back to churning out awesome arcade titles like After Burner Climax and the next Virtua Fighter.
