SEGA announces 3D Fantasy Zone on Nintendo 3DS

Celebrating the series’ 28th anniversary, SEGA of Japan and developer M2 have announced Fantasy Zone will be making a return in glorious 3D on March 19 on the Nintendo’s 3DS eShop for 762 yen.

The game is based on the original arcade version running on SEGA’s System 16 arcade hardware and will feature an Opa-Opa Bros. mode, which lets you play as Opa-Opa’s brother, Upa-Upa, once you beat the game.

In this mode, several key changes have been made. At the beginning of the game, players will choose items to purchase with a set amount of money and won’t be able to purchase upgrades like in the original version, creating an entirely new dynamic to the game.

Other features include full stereoscopic 3D support, the option to choose between the U.S. and Japanese versions, which feature different soundtracks, multiple screen modes (including one emulating a classic arcade screen) and four difficulty levels.

What’s more, SEGA of Japan announced 3D Fantasy Zone is the first game in the second phase of its 3D Classics, meaning several more are on their way.

Additionally, SEGA will release volumes one through three of Fantasy Zone’s soundtrack on iTunes and Amazon on March 26 for 1,200 yen for the full set and 150 yen for each song.

SEGA didn’t say if 3D Fantasy Zone will be released in the West, but as it’s one of our favorite classic SEGA games, we’re definitely crossing our fingers. In the meantime, how about you check out our 3D Classics reviews of Shinobi III, Ecco the Dolphin, Galaxy Force II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast and Space Harrier.
