SEGA announces ‘worldwide partnership’ with Nintendo – Sonic Lost World to be Nintendo exclusive

Today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast revealed a few surprises SEGA Nerds everywhere (we have more posts coming out today). One of the biggest announcements was thatthe new Sonic title, Sonic Lost World, leaked just a couple of days ago, is actually going to be a Nintendo-exclusive game.

Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata announced in the presentation that the company would be entering a ‘worldwide partnership’ with SEGA and that Sonic Lost World would be exclusive to the Wii U and 3DS.

The new agreement will make Nintendo consoles the exclusive destination for Sonic’s next three titles.  The first two titles of the deal were announced today, with details of the third Sonic title will be revealed at a later date.

“Sonic the Hedgehog has performed incredibly well on Nintendo platforms and this exclusive partnership is a natural fit for the next evolution of Sonic games” commented Jurgen Post, COO SEGA Europe.  “The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are ideal platforms to showcase Sonic and we are looking forward to working with Nintendo on these three exciting adventures.”

We reported on the trademark of Sonic Lost World, but didn’t know any further information about the game, until today. While this isn’t entirely surprising that Sonic Lost World would be a Nintendo-only title, as the company has had success with Sonic Colours and other Nintendo-exclusive Sonic titles, I think a lot of people would have expected a new Sonic game to be multiplatform, especially with the (generally) well-received Sonic Generations.

Nothing else was really said about the game, the only other ‘detail’ we have is the image (above) showing Sonic on the top of Tails’ plane, heading towards a planet… or a world… possibly a ‘lost world’. But as Nintendo Direct is a pre-E3 presentation, I think we can all expect further information on Sonic Lost World at E3 itself. At least I hope we do.

Well, we are certainly excited for Sonic Lost World. On a personal note, I really hope it is as good as Sonic Colors, which, despite some irritating cutscenes, is my favourite Sonic game in a long time.
